Anti-semitism is one of those controversial topics which seems to generate some very strange attitudes at times.

Tim Blair highlights an anti-semitic comment made by socialist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez recently. I've no particular interest in defending Chavez and I don't pay nearly as much attention to Latin America as perhaps I should. Still, when someone is slightly missing the point one wonders how it happens.

Unity has already pointed out the problem with attaching an anti-semite meaning to Chavez comment when Norm Geras mentioned the same. It appear that Norm felt the need to add a partial retraction of his allegation of anti-semitism. Chavez, it seems clear, was ranting against Europeans and not Jews. I wonder if Tim Blair will also clarify his post?
