Unfortunately, Aberdeen probably has more of these extreme Christian types than the average British city. The writer of Jerry Springer: the Opera, Stephen Lee, was in Aberdeen yesterday and was heckled by Christian fundies who'd like to save us from ourselves. He was forced to cut short his appearance by these hecklers. A protestor said:
I have read part of this and it's dreadful. It's absolutely vile and is an insult. This poor man who wrote this play is obviously hurt in some way and he hates Christians and Christ. God help him when he meets his maker.The script is filth and shouldn't be shown in Aberdeen. It should be sent back to hell where it belongs.God help him when he meets his maker? Well, according to their beliefs, at least help wouldn't be far away...
Another protestor travelled from Braemar to attend the protest (that's about an hour and a half away by car). He said "I would not go and see it any more than I would go and watch a public hanging or a flogging". But he would travel all the way to Aberdeen to tell us that. And, by his own admission, he doesn't actually know what he's talking about as he hasn't seen the show. Utterly bizarre.
Christian Voice have also announced their intention to write to Prince Edward, the patron of His Majesty's Theatre, asking him to resign his position if the theatre goes ahead with its plan to stage the show in March.
I rarely blaspheme. As an "unbeliever" I don't really see the need to use religious references to express myself but Jesus Christ in a nappy, what is wrong with these people?
