Yesterday, the government had to back down on its proposal to allow police to hold suspects for up to 90 days without charge. This is certainly good news.
Yesterday evening I found myself wandering how the government were likely to respond to this development. Arresting a few terrorist suspects? No, that's old hat now. New photos of the aftermath of the London bombs made public? Maybe, I thought. Some people might think that this sort of manipulation of the public for political purposes is morally reprehensible, especially given the fact that people lost their lives in the attacks, but the Blair government has never taken such criticisms seriously. They'll do whatever it takes to make people accept the plans they believe are necessary to fight "this" terrorism. They clearly believe that the idea that a government should act within acceptable moral boundaries is irrelevant in such circumstances.
Anyway, I switch on the news today and what do I see? The emergency calls concerning the London bombings have been made public. Coincidence? You decide.
